Avian Research

Avian research at ACCS focuses on furthering our understanding of rare and vulnerable species in Alaska.

Sample Project

Blackpoll Warbler Survival & Migration

Collaborators: Dr. Lindsey Nietmann, Threatened and Endangered Diversity Program, ADF&G; Dr. Alicia Brunner, Migratory Bird Tracking, Audubon Society.

Research Objectives: Determine apparent survival, nest productivity, and migratory pathways of Blackpoll Warblers in Southcentral Alaska.

Methods: We are banding adult and chicks and recapturing them in subsequent years to determine survival. Our Audubon partners are deploying geolocators on adults to determine migratory pathways. Genetics will be sent to the Bird Genoscape Project.

Expected Results: Survival and reproduction information will allow state and federal agencies to better manage this declining species. Information about migratory pathways will help inform the development of wind turbines. We will produce baseline information in Alaska for this understudied Species of Greatest Conservation Need.
