A draft of the Kachemak Bay Reserve’s 5-year Management Plan is now available for public review. The plan will be posted in the Federal Register and open for public comment until June 28, 2021. Please see below to download the plan and directions to submit comments to the public record.
The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a partnership between University of Alaska Anchorage and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As required by the Coastal Zone Management Act, every Reserve around the country has to develop or update a management plan every five years. This plan sets the direction for our programs over the next five years, from 2021 to 2026, and will replace the last approved Management Plan for KBNERR, which was published in 2012 (download the 2012 plan).
The Kachemak Bay NERR does not have any management or regulatory authority over lands and resources in Kachemak Bay, therefore, the 2021-2026 Draft Management Plan articulates context the reserve works in; a strategic plan; program descriptions for research, monitoring, education, and training; administrative structure; resource protection plan; public access; consideration for future land acquisition; and facility development to support reserve operations. The strategic plan outlines overall outcomes of our work, while each sector clarifies their own objectives aligned with those outcomes.
A public meeting will be held at 5PM Monday June 21 (register in advance for this meeting: KBNERR Management Plan Public Meeting). Interested parties may continue to submit comments until the end of June by e-mail to email@example.com or through the Federal Register.
